History is being made. CEFROHT, working with regional civil society organisations, formally presented the EAC Agroecology bill before the East African Legislative Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Tourism and Natural Resources, and the region’s agri food systems will never be the same.
From advocacy to legislation
This milestone marks a significant shift from years of advocacy to concrete legislative action. Years of consultations, drafting and coalition work have produced a text that a regional parliament is now formally considering.
What the committee said
The Committee pledged its support and asked for supplementary material on implementation costs and on how domestication would work in member states that already have seed legislation on the books. Both are reasonable asks and both are being prepared.
What still has to happen
A committee report, a plenary debate, a vote, and then assent by the Heads of State. Any one of those stages can take a year. We publish where the file stands so that nobody following this has to guess.
